Examples Of Functions and Tasks Curriculum Development Review and evaluate curriculum to meet student interests and needs within budget constraints. Coordinate with part‑time instructors to enhance consistency of lecture/laboratory content. Evaluate and revise course descriptions; present proposals for curriculum changes to the Curriculum Committee. Make changes to curriculum as approved within the shared governance structure. Review curriculum for compliance with laws, regulations, and standards. Lecture/Laboratory Preparation Review new textbooks for content, readability, and cost effectiveness. Prepare and update syllabus materials for lectures and laboratories. Prepare and coordinate computer and audio‑visual materials for classroom/laboratory use. Prepare typewritten and graphic handouts and transparencies for classroom/laboratory use. Coordinate with publishing companies regarding instructional materials. Complete book orders and supply master copies of syllabi; prepare lesson plans for lecture or laboratory use. Attend conferences to increase knowledge of subject matter and teaching methods. Familiarize self with operation of all equipment available for use. Lecture/Laboratory Presentation Introduce and present lecture/laboratory information and concepts clearly. Use analogies and examples to convey political science concepts. Provide instructional objectives to direct student learning. Use visual aids, demonstrations, and examples to enhance presentations. Distribute handouts for difficult topics. Answer student questions clearly and respectfully. Encourage student participation and involvement in discussions. Monitor student activity and take steps to prevent unacceptable behavior. Maintain order in classrooms and laboratories, providing equal opportunity for participation. Student Performance Evaluation Develop quizzes, texts, and examinations that fairly evaluate student progress. Monitor student activity during examinations and quizzes, preventing cheating and other unacceptable behavior. Read and evaluate student responses; assign grades; advise students on academic matters. Refer students to appropriate services (e.g., ESL, EOPS). Input student scores into computer systems and provide printouts as needed. Shared Governance Participation Attend and participate in departmental meetings and activities. Respond in writing to requests for information and to participate in curriculum development and equipment selection. Represent department by serving on campus‑wide committees. Attend divisional meetings and activities; serve on employee selection committees as requested. Participate in Faculty Senate and Staff Development Committee as needed. Read and respond to information polls distributed by the Faculty Senate. Ancillary Student Services Hold regular office hours; provide academic advice. Serve as a positive role model, supporting character and citizenship development. Participate in graduation and award ceremonies. Provide letters of recommendation as requested; hold review sessions of classroom/laboratory material. Advise and encourage students relative to departmental curriculum. Minimum Qualifications Master’s in political science, government, or international relations OR Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in economics, history, public administration, social science, sociology, ethnic studies, Juris Doctor (J.D.) or equivalent. Part‑time faculty teaching assignment with salary rates as per the Part‑Time/Adjunct Salary Schedule. Verification of credentials, transcripts, LiveScan, and tuberculosis examination as required. Copies of transcripts must be attached to the application; unofficial transcripts are accepted. Equivalency information available; foreign transcript evaluation required if applicable.
